The city’s historic architecture is here, including the Town Hall, the Treasury Building, and the Parliament Building. The incredible Victoria State Library and the Old Gaol Museum are to the north. Queen Victoria Market is here too.
Melbourne is famous for its backstreet alleys lined with restaurants, bars, and clubs. The best ones are around Collins Street. Bourke Street is the main commercial drag. Search for historic buildings and arcades. Chinatown is north of Bourke.

Windsor and Prahran are the best suburbs to stay in Melbourne. We spent 10 days there recently and had a blast. Both neighborhoods are east of the CBD and south of the river. However, several trams and buses connect them to the entire city in minutes.
Windsor, with its leafy streets, is a bit posher than Prahran. That said, it’s still pretty authentic and relaxed. Some of the best bars in Melbourne line Chapel Street. Even if you don’t stay in Windsor, visit at night.
Prahran is still pretty edgy and fun. The area around Greville Street is famous for its eateries and bars. The world-famous Greville Record Shop is here. Don’t forget to check out Chapel Bazaar, a fantastic vintage mall.

You can walk from St. Kilda West next to the sea to Elwood Beach. Even in winter, it’s a lovely walk. The area around the esplanade is full of life. You can shop, eat, have coffee, and drink all year round.
The parks and gardens next to the coast are pretty cool too. Don’t forget to visit the St. Kilda Botanical Gardens. The historic park holds plants from all over the world. You can reach St. Kilda with a short tram ride from all over the city.

Richmond in eastern Melbourne is where to stay if you want to be under the radar. The Yarra River kind of loops to the south and east of Richmond. The Cricket Stadium is to the west and Victoria St. is north.
Locals call it little Saigon. Though there’s a vibrant Vietnamese community, today, people from all over the world live in Richmond. That’s why the restaurants in the neighborhood are so good! Since lots of students live here, the bars are cool too.
Richmond is perfect if you like to walk. There are pedestrian paths and bike lanes next to the river. You can walk to the center in 40 minutes. That said, several trams connect Richmond with the center in approximately 20 minutes.

How Long to Stay in Melbourne
There are so many things to do and see in Melbourne that you can spend weeks in the city and never have a dull moment. The last time we visited, we spent 2 weeks in the city, and it was not enough!
However, we all have time issues and a huge world to discover. Therefore, you are probably wondering how many days are needed in Melbourne to cover the basics. We believe you should spend at least 3 nights in the city.
You will have to rush a bit, but you will get to see the main attractions and enjoy your time. If you have extra time, we strongly recommend visiting Ballarat or Bendigo. If you have even more time, you have to go to Sydney and the Blue Mountains.
Moving Around Melbourne
The best way of moving around Melbourne is by walking. Since the city is not that big, you can walk everywhere. Besides, most of the city’s main attractions are in the center, within walking distance of each other.
Biking is another way of discovering Melbourne. There are bike lanes everywhere. We like biking along the coast enjoying the views. You can rent bikes everywhere. The city has a bike-sharing system too. It’s very easy to operate.
The city has a fantastic public transportation system that includes buses, trams, and sub-urban trains. Buy the local Myki card and use it everywhere you go. You can recharge it in supermarkets and stations. The tram is free within the CBD!
